Sram Part Project: Exhibition and auction at Chicago’s Gallery 1028

Johnny and I were honored to be a part of the SRAM part PROJECT: A gala part PROJECT exhibition and auction at Chicago’s Gallery 1028.
Sram challenged prominent artists to create original works of art from bike components. Here’s a box of 100 high-performance bike components. Now make something of it. That’s the challenge SRAM laid down for a group of noted artists from across the country, handpicked by Milwaukee’s art Guru Terrence Coffman and SRAM’s very own Marketing Chief David Zimberoff. The participating artists more than met this challenge. The art works were auctioned off to raise money for World Bicycle Relief, which gives people in underdeveloped countries access to independence and economic opportunity through the gift of a bicycle.
World Bicycle Relief was founded by SRAM corporation in 2005 in response to the Indian Ocean Tsunami. World Bicycle Relief partnered with aid organizations on the ground in Sri Lanka to distribute over 24,000 bicycles to aid the rebuilding of lives by providing access to education and healthcare and reconnecting workers to their livelihood. The organization is dedicated to providing access to independence and livelihood through The Power of Bicycles. Compared to walking, bicycles improve access to education, healthcare and economic opportunity by increasing carrying capacity and accessible travel distance while decreasing the time it takes to commute to and from schools, clinics and markets.
This amazing event was produced by one of Chicago’s greatest producers, Andrew Snyder.

Charles Mwanjeleka, a self-made Zambian businessman and artist, has created a line of charming figurines to support World Bicycle Relief. Hand crafted from wire, brown paper, and Melie-Meal (white corn meal, a Zambian food staple), these unique pieces portray Zambian caregivers, students, mechanics and entrepreneurs using their bicycles to carry huge loads, a scene typical of the Zambian landscape.

Chicago photographer Leah Missbach-Day, created amazing imagery capturing the poetic joy brought by the bicycles.

Real Tradition Continues at The Drake Hotel

Thanksgiving Day is absolutely one of the most American traditions of all time. At the base of this tradition, is indisputably the food! Perhaps the food itself is not so important, but the meal, and gathering for such, is the focus. Growing up in a family with 5 children, the Thanksgiving Day meal was always an affair. As our family grew older, and the children moved out, my mother would fight with us so hard to be sure we did not miss her Thanksgiving Day meal. The food was most often the same, and spectacular. I could go on here about the amazing homemade dishes my mother would prepare, but again, that was not the focus. The focus was bringing her family together, often not sure if it would be the last time, that last time did come, and far to soon. Creating portraits for families on Thanksgiving Day is not only a job, but also an honor, a privilege, and a pleasure. We know, although, in the moment, it’s just another convenient opportunity to have a family portrait taken, but years down the road, you may look back, and realize that it was the last opportunity. I have a family portrait of my family, from the last time we were together around the holidays. My mother made a point to ask me to create this for her. She had me print 8x10s for each sibling, she went to the craft store and bought the frames, and made sure that each one of us had one. She was so proud of her family. Thank you to The Drake Hotel for making us a part of their family!
